What AI Overviews and AI Mode are
According to Google, AI Overviews help you grasp the key idea of a complex topic or question more quickly and act as a starting point for following links. AI Mode returns a more detailed answer with links to websites that support it, and is designed for queries that need reasoning or comparison.
Both may use a technique called “query fan-out”: running several related searches across different subtopics and sources to build the answer. That is why they can show a wider variety of links than a classic search.
What your website needs in order to appear
Google’s documentation is clear: a page can be shown as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Beyond the normal technical requirements, there is nothing more.
Googlebot is not blocked: check robots.txt and your security plugins.
The page works and returns an HTTP 200 status code.
It has indexable content: real text, not just images.
It has no snippet restrictions that stop it being shown (nosnippet, a very restrictive max-snippet) if you want to appear.
It is registered in Search Console so you can spot indexing errors.
Even if you meet everything, Google says so explicitly: indexing and display are not guaranteed.
What content makes most sense to create
Google recommends what it calls “non-commodity” content: material with its own point of view, first-hand experience or analysis that is not a simple summary of what already exists. A page that merely repeats what others say adds little.
- Explain your real experience: how you work, which problems you solve, which mistakes you often see.
- Organise each page with clear paragraphs, sections and headings for people.
- Support the text with relevant, good-quality images or video.
- Do not mass-produce pages for every variant of a search: Google treats it as possible scaled content abuse.
- If you use AI tools to write, check that the result meets Google’s policies and adds real value.
The control question
Google suggests asking yourself whether people who land on your page would be satisfied. If the answer is doubtful, improve the page before thinking about AI.
If you have a local business
Google recommends using Google Business Profile (and, for shops, Merchant Center) so that products and services can appear in AI answers and other results. A complete listing that matches your website is a sensible foundation. We explain it in local SEO: how to show up on Google Maps.
What Google says you do not need
- Special files or markup: Google says you do not need to create AI text files, new markup or Markdown. It also says it ignores llms.txt (see what llms.txt is).
- Special schema: structured data is not required for these features, although if you use it, it should match the visible text.
- Chopping up your content or writing in a special way for AI.
- Chasing inauthentic mentions around the web.
And if you do not want to appear, you can control that too: with snippet directives or the “Search generative AI” setting in Search Console you can exclude your links and content from these features, without affecting the rest of your results.
How to measure whether you appear
Search Console includes a generative AI performance report that shows your site’s impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by pages, countries, dates and devices. Google says it is available for all websites from 31 August 2026, although it may not appear if you have received few impressions.
It is an impressions report: it is not a ranking and does not guarantee visits. Traffic arriving from these features is also added to the normal performance report, under the “Web” search type. If you need support, our GEO and AI visibility service covers this review.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay Google to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google states that it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or to rank it higher. To appear in AI features, the only requirement is that the page is indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet.
Do I need structured data to appear?
It is not required for these features, and there is no special schema to add. It can still be useful for other Search features, as long as it matches what is visible on the page. The priority is for the page to be indexable and useful.
Can I avoid appearing in AI answers?
Yes. The nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex directives limit what is shown from your pages. Search Console also lets you exclude your site from generative AI features, normally within a day or two, without affecting ranking in the rest of Search.
How long until I appear in AI Mode?
There is no timescale or guarantee. The page must first be indexed, and Google warns that indexing and display are not assured. Whether a link appears depends on each query and the alternatives available. Measure it in Search Console and do not expect immediate results.
